That's what I was trying to express in my post- I don't know if something is better than nothing. At this point I don't think we even know how much more expensive "something" will be than nothing- and yet I would think that is one of the most important elements in the equation- considering the deep doo doo we are in wrt our finances. If we hurt the economy with new actions on immigration AND it ends up costing a huge amount (which it could, especially if pork gets rolled in to the mix) this could end up being very bad indeed.

I know the thread is called "View from the Center"- but I've never thought that was apt. I think what most of us here are looking for are views that makes sense and are supported by something more than wishful thinking- Sure, we'll need a majority to get anyone elected, and that will involve the center, but does anyone here really care about the center if they go for whacked out ideas that don't make sense? I sure don't. So let's just call what we do by it's real name- we're looking for rationality in the political landscape, and we're looking for a bit of utilitarianism. I think we're all a little tired of ideology on this thread- because ideology decoupled from reality can take you some pretty strange places. I wish the thread were called "The View from the Utilitarian" Or "Realpolitik- can we have some please?".
