no, they can not if there production but issues. In that case Core 2 duo would kill p4 without providing a replacement. It is not a new theory but something that many people, including myself, thought might be a likely scenario.

re: doesn't mean it would be impossible for Dell to offer Athlon 64s or Semprons anyway just like HP and others currently do.

and loose price breaks from intel? Unlikely.......

re: AMD could lose more from Dell/Alienware in desktops than they make up in 4-way servers.

I can live with loosing some gamers in favour of fewer but reacher fortune 500 clients....
