Five arraigned in Irish smuggling investigation

May 18, 2006, 5:11 PM EDT

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) _ Five Irish nationals were arraigned Thursday as part of an alleged human smuggling ring that authorities said delivered dozens of illegal aliens from Ireland to the United States by way of Canada.

The U.S. Attorney's office said the group was part of a "robust" smuggling ring that operated for the last few years out of a Buffalo pub.

Bridget Campbell, owner of Campbell's Pub, has pleaded guilty to receiving thousands of dollars for bringing 30 to 50 illegal aliens across the border since December 2003.

A bartender at the pub also faces charges. Several of those smuggled in have pleaded guilty to illegally entering the country.

Investigators from U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement said that from Buffalo, the illegal aliens traveled to New York City, Philadelphia and Boston, where most obtained jobs at Irish pubs or in construction.
