What's wrong with the simpler explanation? Dell went AMD in high end servers because Intel doesn't have a competitive 4S solution, and won't until H207 at the earliest. If they started on the project at the end of last year, that would be within a couple months of the dud known as Paxville MP. So in other words, Dell designed (would have when they release) around 1 year worth of servers and gave Intel the PR hit and AMD the PR boost (that even 500 million could not have bought) just for 6 months of viable product? That's a simple explanation? At the minimum the simple explantion is that Dell does not see Intel being competitive in >2S for at least 2+ years AND that segment is becomming an important part of the x86 business AND customers are more than willing to buy (probably demanding) and AMD solution!! That should send shivers down any Intel long. Remember the days when most profits were made in high end Xeon's? Also remember that high end servers have a halo effect downwards and the Woodcreast (porpoted) advantage of ~20% in server workloads may not be there even in 2S (4C) or may be severly diminished to the extent that customers may demand a common CPU platform even in 2S from Dell.
