even if NGA has a 20% lead in 1S, it is a wash in 2S

Still whistling? :)

And what's with the brain-dead prefetching scheme you envision? You don't actually believe that Intel or AMD would implement something that did not adapt to different load conditions, do you?

I swear, you often compose these huge posts full of unsourced numbers and odd notions that lead one to believe you're just making it all up on the fly.

No, I didn't forget. I imagined DELL making a case (of debatable credibility) that a 2P Woodcrest would do 80-100% of the work of a 4P Opteron on some workloads. Weasel words. Benchmark specific. But worse has already been done.

Yes, Linpack is ideal for Woodcrest with just small enough workset to sit in cache.

Yes, Woodcrest will suck at HyperTransport loving applications. That won't stop the smoke and mirror hype.

Like Pravin, I can't figure out why DELL is waiting until the end of the year to sell the 4P Opteron. They've been working with Opteron internally ever since launch. They are not ready to roll one out tomorrow? That stinks worse than yesterday's fish.

You can't fall in love with a stock, even if you are in love with a technology.

Is AMD at 35 going to reach 70 sooner than
INTC at 18 is to reach $36?
Is it as likely?
Is the probability of 20% loss the same?

The thing that kept me in AMD at $40 was the "tripling" of facilities: Adding FAB 36 and CHRT to FAB 30 with Fishkill for insurance. But are they going to be making the right stuff? June 1 is important for an answer.

I think the week after will be a net gain for INTC. For the convention to be a net win for AMD, June 1 has to be the unveiling of something exciting with detail coming out at the convention. Otherwise, it will be NGA here, NGA there and K8 is history.

"So the chance of Dell cancelling 4S Opterons as remote. Intel will not have an effective solution for some time."

Enjoyed your post. I'm guessing Dell must really like AMD's roadmap to have made such a fundamental change in their company strategy after 22 years of INTC-only. If INTC's roadmap had any teeth, I just can't see Dell having realigned in this manner.

Hector stated on CNN that Dell engineers know more about AMD's Opteron than many other OEM's as they've been working intimately with AMD for well over a year now.

I can only conclude that this Dell announcement is but the tipo of the iceberg and that, notwithstanding all the NGA hype, that AMD will be delivering huge quantities of competitive product across all lines going forward.

Hence Dirk's and Osha's confidence that AMD will attain 30% share in the not too distant. (They are probably being conservative in their growth expectations, just in case the Dougie-like (Note: Sharikou is on ridolin by comparison)hyping of NGA turns out at hyped performance levels and in more than dribbling volume.)
