Re: Dell-AMD rat

I tend to agree with the skeptics. I won't believe a word out of Dell until I actually see some Dell machines sold with AMD inside...

This is not a game- at least not one setup like you are imagining. Too much potential for image damage to Intel and image boost to AMD- just by the announcement.

I think they tried to contain the image damage to the one portion of a segment (4P servers). Dell to customers: "We acknowledge that AMD has the best stuff in this one little area, so don't leave us yet, we'll have the best stuff there before long!"

Then in 6 or 9 months: "We believe Intel now has the best performing processors and roadmaps in EVERY PROCESSOR SEGMENT."

That sort of PR would easily rectify the prior image damage and would definitely do serious harm to AMD's image.

All IMHO of course.

Does anybody know if it would have been standard practice for AMD to require the future sale of X processors by Y time before agreeing to any public announcement? IOW, even if Dell cancels I hope they at least have to buy a load of spendy 8xx Opterons...

Regards,

JJ

re: Publically, that's a dangerous game to play- because it may get away from them.

I do not think so. Intel admitted that their chips are inferior now so dell's news is at worst a mosquito bite to intel. OTOH it may help intel in the future with their main thesis of regaining leadership
