re: Great article. But this isn't just a Bush problem. We have an America full of people who want instant gratification and know nothing of sacrifice for the greater good. Patriotism is decried as politically incorrect and people won't do what is right if it costs them a nickel.

We need leadership, and Bush is certainly part of that problem, as is the clown congress.

re: A good follow through would be to increase the gas tax and use the proceed for alternative energy development.

When you think about gasoline, it's really amazing stuff. A gallon of the gasoline (think of a tiny gallon milk bottle) will move a 2000 pound vehicle 40 miles.

The problem isn't gasoline, the problem is the inefficient devices that use gasoline. It's a play on the NRA thing "guns don't shoot people, people shoot people".

Most everybody can drive a vehicle that gets 12 MPG or a vehicle that gets 45 MPG, an efficiency improvement of almost 400%. The result is the same, point A to point B.

Let's tax the crap out of the anti-social people that choose 12 MPG, they are costing us all... in everything from international politics to the price we pay for gas to the trade deficit to the air we breathe and our health. Take that money and reward the good citizens with incentives to drive gas efficient vehicles. If those efficient vehicles are alternate energy, even better.

Every Escalade you see cruising down the road with one person is criminal, they are stealing from everyone in the country. They are unpatriotic, they are are screwing their neighbors, they think they are showing off but they are setting up the next 9/11 and the next recession. It's a free country, but they should be penalized for their anti-social behaviour. We tax the crap out of cigarettes, we can certainly tax the crap out of gas guzzlers.

I'm not saying a huge tax on gas is a bad thing, I just think there are better solutions. "Gasoline doesn't waste gasoline, idiots and their inefficient vehicles waste gasoline".

John

PS Another small idea is to mandate MPG signs on the back of every vehicle... maybe we can embarrass some of these people into social responsibility.
