I'll tell you a story. During the project, a lot of old concrete had to be removed. Getting rid of old concrete isn't easy, but I did and before a major pour I gave a crew of about 10, twenty dollars apiece as a tip so they would be motivated to do a good job. The funny part of the story is that one of the apprentice helpers started asking if that was his pay for the day.

Regarding mexicans and central americans in NY.
After 9/11 the government paid cash to day laborers to go to the site and help clear the rubble. These folks would line up near the sites each morning. I would walk by them each morning and some of us would by coffee and donuts for the folks waiting. We knew they were all illegal. I believe one of them told a friend of mine that they were working for a $50 bill each day. First responders and folks who worked at or near the site back then are already having serious health problems. Do you think any of the mexican bashers out there would have switched places with these folks? How many christian conservatives would volunteer to pick fruit or work in todays apparel sweatshops. How many would travel half way across the country loaded into the back of vans?
