One of the most interesting aspects to me of nutrition is how the nutritional content of agribusiness-produced fruit and vegetables has plummetted. The mass-produced identical-looking apples, tomatoes, and green peppers have only a fraction of the vitamins and other nutrients like bioflavinoids than the produce people ate a century ago (and of the non-mass-produced organic produce of today.)

Attempts to make up for this deficit by adding vitamins to processed foods and taking vitamins in supplement form are only partially successful because this approach overlooks the poorly-understood role of hundreds of micronutrients that are also in short supply in agribusiness produce.

So the best approach to nutrition is to as much as possible to eat only produce grown by yourself or local organic farmers, adding vitamin supplements to make up any deficits.
