McCarthy was one of the most dishonest creeps in US political history. His trick was to use "communism", which before the Cold War was actually just a populist union workers movement in the US after the Great Depression (the opposite of the military dictatorship Soviet Russia turned out to be), as a way to demonize anyone who had ever read a leftwing or "communist" newspaper, attended a worker's or union meeting, taken a leftwing book out of the library, met with anyone in Europe or Russia for any reason, sang a protest song, was gay, voiced different opinions, joined a peace group, etc. etc. etc. All of these people including some of our greatest most freedom-loving Americans, McCarthy persecuted and attempted to ruin. He also tried to dominate and destroy our free press, and with it free speech in general, thereby basically trampling on our Constitution. What would have resulted in Mcarthy had has his way? Some sort of onje-party rightwing fascism. Maybe not as bad as Nazi Germany, but bad. Very bad. And not much better than the enemy he purported to oppose, Soviet Russia. All this is what people like Anne Couler want to bring back. It's really sick, un-American, un-Constitutional and just plain ugly.
