Many, probably most, creatures are aware of their surroundings but not necessarily aware of their place in their surroundings.

So self awareness is an awareness of ones place in ones surroundings?

I'm speculating that our obsession with our place in the world is detrimental in the long term.

On what (experience) are you basing this speculation. Obsession denotes an already unhealthy state of being, it's basic characteristic is the fundamental dissatisfaction that it elicits. So by definition your characterisation implies detriment, it allows no other choice ergo it's based on a false dichotomy.

Why not speculate on the possibility that their are more skillful and less skillful ways of being in the world, of understanding or observing our place in our surroundings if you prefer, and that if one can apply skillful means it increases the chances of a beneficial result as opposed to a detrimental one. My suggested speculation would occupy much less of your time than yours seems to be doing and you would have more time available to speculate on what those skillful means might be..
