Chris Matthews is politically neutral. He reports what he sees and is an equal opportunity critic. He does seem to have it out for extremists though. He lashed out at Dennis Kucinich and attack-beeatch Michelle Malkin, while kissing the butts of Dick Armey, John McCain and Rep. Boehner. He was tough on John Kerry (unfairly) for not being absolutely pro-war or anti-war, when the right stance was neither position, and most Americans agreed with that. Matthews also correctly predicted a year ago that the culprits in Plamegate were in Cheney's office, perhaps Cheney himself. Sure enough.

Chris Matthews often found kissing butts of conservatives mediamatters.org I am always surprised when the rightwing calls Matthews a "liberal". True, he is tough on rightwingers like Malkin and Zell Miller who come on his show and deliberately lie-lie-lie, but in general he is tougher on democrats and especially leftwing liberals like Kucinich, who is also lambasted for no particular reason. Here is an example.
