I'm by no means an expert, but I do believe corn is probably the worst crop for soil depletion. As I mentioned earlier, certain other crops like sorghum can be planted using "no-till" methods and are cut like hay. You never are "turning" the soil. It also grows well with legumes like clover that as a byproduct produce nitrogen, eliminating a substantial amount of fertilizer.
