my problem with your last statement is that it sounds like it is a government program as well ... show me someone doing it for the pure profit of it and I'd buy there's a reasonable wide margin for it -- no free market investment in it and it's just hard to believe.

Agronomics of corn has been studied ad nausem in every ag college in America for decades. There are no secrets there. It would be nice to think corn-to-fuel could be done economically if for no other reason than to eliminate the subsidies agriculture already receives to grow it. My gut feel is that this is nothing more than a grab for federal dough, it is how we play the game until the rules change.

printed a few papers on the web that have recieved some debate -- will check out the calculations -- especially why they are so far apart ....
