I kept a place in Osaka for many years and was there about once a month. Japan decided to bury their bubble in the backyard and it is still rotting there. It has cost them an entire generation of young people who have poor job prospects and who end up not forming families. It will soon be two decades of chonic underperformance.

As to the comparison to the US, we spend so freely that the idea of any self-control is beyond our understanding. Now it will be imposed on us and we will howl. But there will be no depression in the US -- just a long sickly slide while the reality of our miserable public and private finances come home to haunt us.
