This does not make sense to me. How could cutting off any body of water from a much larger one cause such a change? Even if you distilled the entire water of the Mediterranean and added it to the oceans, I don't think you could make much of a difference to the global salinity levels...or else all the melting glaciers would have already taken care of the problems.

I think the process consisted of repeated flooding and drying cycles, with the resulting salt being deposited and covered on the basin floor. This takes net salt out of the oceans, which raised the freezing point of ocean water, allowing more polar ice formation which then reflects more solar energy back out to space, which decreases the earths temp, which makes more ice...
