UPDATE 1-RESEARCH ALERT-American Tech cuts semiconductor sector
Wed May 24, 2006 11:18 AM ET
(Adds details for downgrades)
May 24 (Reuters) - American Technology Research on
Wednesday downgraded the semiconductor sector to "equal weight"
from "overweight" on higher interest rates and demand risks.
It said the market will continue to discount the
semiconductor sector until the markets are able to find
stability in interest rates, energy, and commodity prices.
American Technology Research also downgraded Analog Devices
Inc. (ADI.N: Quote, Profile, Research), Maxim Integrated Products Inc. (MXIM.O: Quote, Profile, Research), and
Linear Technology Corp. (LLTC.O: Quote, Profile, Research) to "hold" from "buy" as it
said investors were beginning to apply multiples to GAAP
earnings estimates which include the impact of stock options.
It downgraded Freescale Semiconductor Inc. (FSL.N: Quote, Profile, Research), Semtech
Corp. (SMTC.O: Quote, Profile, Research) to "hold" from "buy".
On Freescale, American Technology Research said the shares
are up 20 percent year-to-date and over 70 percent over the
past 18 months and it was time to take profit.
For Semtech, it cited lack of turnaround signs, increased
likelihood of competitive assault from Intersil Corp. (ISIL.O: Quote, Profile, Research),
and recent reports of stock option timing investigations.
