"During the same time, the average temperature around the equator has risen by a fraction of a degree – a fraction that in some areas can mean drought and desolation."

I think the average world temperature is rising- so the world heats up, but weather patterns are changing, so some of the food growing regions may be cooling- but average world temperatures still seem to be rising, and the rise is accelerating, and that doesn't equal global cooling.

Take a look at the map of the US- while some areas are cooling, it's clear the average temperature of the US has gone up in the last 100 years. Since we don't really understand the dynamism of Earth's weather cycles, it's hard to predict what comes next. I remember the whole new ice age thing being trotted out in the 70's- but the trend then, as now, was for a warmer planet. I don't know where the folks in this article got their information, but I think pretty much everyone agrees the Earth has warmed (it's hard to fight the charts- which all say the Earth has warmed on average), the only question now is how much will it continue to warm.

There have been some hypothetical articles discussing the role global warming may play in triggering global cooling- but those are hypotheses. It's quite clear that as of this moment global temperatures are rising, and have risen. That's a done deal. There is no evidence for average global cooling yet- since average temperature increases appear to be accelerating.
