Supply and demand. However, the worldwide oil market does not factor into the price of a gallon of gasoline government military protection for the oil supplies, government debt incurred for that protection, etc. If the oil companies had to actually live by free market priciples and pay for the protection of their product, gasoline would cost closer to $10.00/gallon and obviously we'd be looking seriously at altneratives. We should all feel lucky that the U.S. taxpayer pays to keep gasoline artifically low around $3.00/gallon. It should be a lot higher if we did not interfere with the markets with our military.

Oil is an open market? You've GOT to be kidding. One of the most subsidized substances we consume. Its about as open a market as US corn and soybean production.
