It only appears to be a difference to the one doing the selection.

The key thing that a breeder does is keep the "purebred" lifeforms isolated. The same technique works in natural selection, except that complete isolation of a breeding subset is rather rare in nature. Usually the lifeforms mix it up pretty indiscriminately blending out the traits.
