That's great news for speculators who want out of contracts as it's a major code violation. Table R703.4 of the International Residential Code, which almost every state follows with their own additions, states clearly that unless you use a shiplapped siding (basically T1-11) or batten the seams you MUST use a waterproof sheathing (14+ pound felt, tyvek, or equivalent) under vinyl or aluminum siding.

Those houses are going to have rotted sheathing in 10 years, and serious mold problems much sooner.

Sheesh, I wonder if they flash their houses?

They were probably not Ryland Homes condos where you saw them doing this. I've spent a considerable amount of my time blurring out the Tyvek covered buildings that can be seen through the windows of their models to know that they use Tyvek on all their homes.

OTOH considering how many just arrived Central Americans and Mexicans there are in the building trades these days it wouldn't surprise me if they just left that step out because the foreman was away from the site for an hour. My husband runs from one location to the next to make sure his guys aren't doing something dumb and he's in commercial where they get a much better class of worker.
