Crimson > Even while the House approved the bill, however, hardline neoconservatives and leaders of the Christian Right here launched a strong attack on Olmert's "realignment" plans under the general theme that, in the words of one full-page Washington Times ad paid for by far-right Americans for a Safe Israel (ASI), "Friends don't let friends commit suicide." ASI's ad was signed by half a dozen Christian Right groups – a core constituency of Bush's. It warned that realignment would "reverse the victorious miracles of [the] 1967 [Arab-Israeli War]" and violate "God's promise to the Jewish people," asserting that "there is a moral duty for the United States to restrain the State of Israel from destroying itself."

This is the real problem and these right-wing hard-liners and religious fanatics are the people who will block any move by Israel towards returning any land to the Palestinians. In fact Olmert, even by suggesting it, is exposing himself to being assassinated in exactly the same way Rabin was. I'm sorry to say there is still going to be a lot of trouble -- and, indeed, a lot of bloodshed.
