There are 300 million people in the US. Less than 10% hardly counts as "major".

Well, the operating word is "frequently"... Replace it with "regularly" and you can safely double that number, that is, about 60 million people living in the US speak or write Spanish every now and then....


Given your definition of the word, we could triple the number; after all, Spanish is one of the major languages we study in school along with French and German.
