MJ, if you want the advise I would give my family members & this is just my opinion & my biases from what I have learned on the sujbect:

1) Read what Stewart Whitman posts on this board. He is one of the sharpest individuals you will find on spin-offs. He is willing to share information without asking for anything in return. He is simply bright and classy. Nuff said.

2) Read the SEC filings on any particular spin-off. These filings can be typically found on a company's website.

3) Order this book today, "You Can Be a Stock Market Genius : Uncover the Secret Hiding Places of Stock Market Profits" by Joel Greenblatt (Paperback - Feb 25, 1999)
amazon.com

4) Order "Spinoff to Payoff: An Analysis Guide to Investing in Corporate Divestitures" (Hardcover) by Joseph W. Cornell
amazon.com

Each spinoff has its own terms and own merits for owning (or not owning). They aren't all profitable and you will need to just learn as much as you can on the subject.

Did you have a question about a specific spinoff? CJ

From this Thread's Header:
"Joel Greenblatt, in his new book "Stock Market Genius" explains how you can get an investing edge by watching for certain things in spin-offs and other plays. A lot of the process involves pouring over the volumes of information in the SEC EDGAR files looking for information about insider stock option and rights and warrants perks. Also the price earnings and other valuations of the spinor and spinee."
