You don't have to sense anything, just look at the history.

Ahh.. come on now Nadine.. You know that reality is irrelevant.. ;0)

Just like the Shah's daddy was a Nazi sympathizer.. So the Brits and Americans overthrew him and put his playboy son in charge so they could concentrate on defeating Hitler in Europe.

Funny thing though.. I was watching some program the other day (I think it was a Sunday talk show) and some pundit made the comment that we overthrew the only democracy that Iran has ever known (Mossadegh).. This, despite the fact that Mossadegh had made HIS OWN "Faustian bargains" with fringe political groups, including neo-nazis, communists, and ultra-nationalists. And certainly the communists, supported by their Soviet patron, had no desire to see democracy supported in Iran, unless it ushered them into a position of power where they could replace it with a Marxist state.

When he succeeded in booting out the Shah, he immediately alienated the population by enacting emergency degrees and complete control over the news to the point that the tide of popular support for him turned and he was, himself, overthrown.

The winds of change blow fast in the Mid-East..

Why I find it humourous is that these are the same people who scoff at any attempts to create a democracy in Iraq.

Seems like we're damned if we do,.. damned if we don't.
