What makes America "America" to me, is respect for the rule of law, free minds, and free markets. None of which have anything to do with ethnicity. That was my point. It doesn't have anything to do with ethnicity but it does have to do with culture. We, as a nation, have that culture. Others don't. If enough people without that culture join ours without assimilation, then that element of their culture will be retained and could overried that element of ours. No, it has nothing to do with ethnicity and continuing to frame it that way is not helpful. I identified with Slovak ethnicity and a watered down version of Slovak culture. The watering down process, the assimilation process, left the ethnic-centric quality of nationality behind. That's what happens with assimilation, which occurs best in dribs and drabs. When I was a kid I used to scratch my head over how ethnicities that were at each other's throats in the old country, all the Eastern Europeans, banded together here because, in US context, they were more alike than different. The old clannishness was lost. And schools taught about our creedal foundation. And assimilation occurred. That would not have happened had half of Slovakia disembarked. I suppose you'd prefer that they self-identify with Texas. I couldn't care less what tribe they feel they belong to. I do care that they buy into the creedial paradigm, not the ethnic one.
