Unfortunately, it became more of a religious thing. Muslims cannot allow land which was part of "Dar-al-Islam" - Home of Islam - to revert to nonbelievers. Accepting any compromise would be acting against the will of God. That's a big problem. I think that's why (in part) Arafat had to walk away from Barak's offer. He could not possibly accept it in the atmosphere of growing religiosity.

There is a pretty symmetrical answer to that in Jewish religious claims to Greater Israel. I'll concede that perhaps it is a smaller fraction of the populace, but it is vocal.

At Camp David, Clinton should have told both parties at the end, either split the difference on what remains, or I'll have the B2s loaded for bear and airborne for your respective homes prior to you getting back yourself.
