Quit blaming the victims of smear campaigns. McCain was also a victim. He found himself damned if he did, damned if he didn't. Nobody has yet been able to figure out how to handle a well-organized, well-funded smear campaign with buffers between the accusers and the beneficiary.

Remember, the real motive of a smear campaign is to knock the opponent off message and make him look guilty by denying the outrageous lies.

They started with Drudge's false accusation of an affair withy an intern. That didn't work so they pulled out the big guns, the extreme rightwing military nuts.

The key is to run the smear campaign without any proof your candidate is involved, but of course Bush-Rove was totally behind the smearvets. It was Rove's project. Delay and his dirty Texas money helped too. Texas has a long history of smear campaigns. When he was young LBJ used to run them too. Bush and LBJ have a lot in common.
