Kerry did exactly that. The day after the smearvets started running their ad, he stated they have nothng to do with the truth, etc., then sent Cleland and his boat crew out to hit the talkshows. He also got McCain to condemn the smearvets. Should he have done more? Absolutely. But he did exactly what you just suggested. Then he went back to talking about real issues and refused to be knocked off-message, which is one of the intents of a smear campaign.

Again, quit blaming the victims of a smear campaign. Clinton, McCain, Kerry were all victims of such smear campaigns. They are all amongst our greatest leaders. if you want to criticize someone, try the smear jockeys themselves for a change. They're the ones who sinned.
