Besides, much of what makes a language interesting is change. Aside from furrin' words, we have lots of new words and new usages all the time. We never used to use surf and click and google in the manner we do today. 100 years from now, American might well be unrecognizable. Precisely. IMO, opposition to change is largely what religion, racism, bigotry, etc. are all about. The principle function is to act as a societal brake mechanism, to retard change within individual's lifespans.
