In order for there to be a solution there needs to be a constiuency for the solution. Many times when there is an issue where science and politics mix, it takes a critical mass of public pressure to nudge the powers that be in to looking for solutions. I don't consider myself a member of any club except for the one which wants government to seriously look at this problem. If you abstain from membership in that "club", then I don't see the point in saying you'd be interested later. After they've found the solution, no one will need you (for this issue, anyway).
