AMD is attempting a socket transition right now. So the "well, I'll stick with AMD becuase I can drop it into my motherboard" factor is absent.

When AMD demos a quad-core device in the new socket as you told us incessantly for months would happen in March, won't "drop it into my motherboard" continue to be a factor?

If I was in the market for a high end system I'd sooner buy a FX dual core now and upgrade to K8L later than wait for whatever Conroe may turn out a few months from now.
