What are possible situations that could cause prices to rise in deflation and how would one see them coming?

Peak oil
Draught
Bird flue pandemic
WWIII
Ice caps melt putting Florida underwater

You get the idea
Obviously some on the above list might mot even be valid

other than stock market prices and land prices what prices actually fell in Japan for 18 years?

Did the price of bread or beer or cigarettes?
Actually I think prices did fall but not by a lot and certainly not by much compared to housing or the stock market.

For INVESTMENT purposes cash was king.
