Doug:

Well, I suggest you look around at the enthusiast forums on the web. That is an EXTREMELY uncommon plan.

Then AMD could do to Conroe by putting out a few well selected benchmarks of K8L. "Say 50% more SPECfp than the same clocked K8F. 300% more SPECfpRATE than equal clocked K8F. 50% more SPECint than K8F and 300% more SPECintRATE as well. Rendering 3 times as fast. And BTW it clocks 25% faster than K8F. Quad core for the same power as dual at same clock. And hot plug HTX coprocessors for HPC, encoding, encryption, network acceleration, physics engines and many other things. Sorry Conroe is now a snail wrt K8L coming Q1 2007."

Things like above would according to you make Conroe completely bypassed by the enthusiast community.

Pete

Actually it is not.

I used to do work for exactly that target audience and that's the way they think.

They want the quick stuff now, not vaguely six months from now and if they see an upgrade path to something that will promise them an easy way to even better performance in the future, they'll jump on it. There's also tremendous peer pressure to be on the cutting edge - try petrol heads without the fumes.
