It’s Memorial Day, Let’s Honor Our Troops

Freedom Alliance Continues Efforts to Support the Military and its Families

Dulles, Virginia – This Memorial Day, Freedom Alliance is asking people to reflect on the sacrifices of our troops and their families and support our injured service members who are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan by donating funds to the Freedom Alliance "Support the Troops" campaign.

“Many of our war wounded are recovering in hospitals far from home and family,” said Freedom Alliance President Tom Kilgannon. “We hope to make their stay in the hospital more comfortable, and show them that America is grateful for their service. There is no better expression of Memorial Day than to help those who defend our freedom throughout the year.”

We are currently collecting phone cards and department store gift certificates: The needs of wounded service members vary by season and the extent of their injuries. Some spend months in the hospital, in which case monetary donations help pay for family travel or increased expenses away from home. Department store gift certificates to national chain stores such as Old Navy, Target, Wal-Mart, Sears, etc., are especially helpful and allow us to meet their needs as they change over time. These months can also be very lonely so phone cards are always requested as they enable our troops to call friends and family anywhere in the country. Thank you in advance for your support of our men and women in uniform.

Monetary donations allow Freedom Alliance to purchase and delivery resources to wounded troops at Thanksgiving, Christmas and throughout the year. Needs include clothing (some arrive with only the clothes on their backs), meals, entertainment, toiletries and other comforts of home. In addition, funds may be used to help with travel and lodging expenses of family members so they may visit and spend more time with their loved ones. In 2005 Freedom Alliance provided over $100,000 in monetary and tangible support to our wounded troops recuperating in military hospitals. We also provided meals at hospitals and military bases at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Military Appreciation Day; provided travel, lodging and food for family members; and $800,000 in college scholarships to the children of permanently injured or fallen service members.

Remembering
by Mary Katharine Ham
Lorie Byrd is collecting tributes for Memorial Day.

I was cleaning out my inbox yesterday and found the story of Marine Capt. Brian Chontosh, who was awarded the Navy Cross for this:

While leading his platoon north on Highway 1 toward Ad Diwaniyah, Chontosh's platoon moved into a coordinated ambush of mortars, rocket propelled grenades and automatic weapons fire. With coalitions tanks blocking the road ahead, he realized his platoon was caught in a kill zone.
He had his driver move the vehicle through a breach along his flank, where he was immediately taken under fire from an entrenched machine gun. Without hesitation, Chontosh ordered the driver to advanced directly at the enemy position enabling his .50 caliber machine gunner to silence the enemy.

He then directed his driver into the enemy trench, where he exited his vehicle and began to clear the trench with an M16A2 service rifle and 9 millimeter pistol. His ammunition depleted, Chontosh, with complete disregard for his safety, twice picked up discarded enemy rifles and continued his ferocious attack.

When a Marine following him found an enemy rocket propelled grenade launcher, Chontosh used it to destroy yet another group of enemy soldiers.

When his audacious attack ended, he had cleared over 200 meters of the enemy trench, killing more than 20 enemy soldiers and wounding several others.

Here's another site commemorating his heroism.

Thankfully, Chontosh lived to receive his award. I thought today would be an appropriate time to link the story, since I missed it earlier.
