The Green Berets did a great job helping the locals, but they were not a war presence, or an army, just a large group of military advisors. Watch the old John Wayne movie Green Beret and study that time period before Johnson took over. It was a textbook lesson in how to maintain order in a small country without escalating into the madness of a full-blown war. It was also very inexpensive for US taxpayers. If only Bush-Cheney had learned the lessons of Vietnam instead of denying them. We are learning the same lesson again now, and our troops and taxpayers are the main victims.
