I think that deteriorating relationships between nations and religions certainly ARE a threat.

I understood soon after 9/11 that the primary target of Islamists is not the West, and not the USA... and not Israel, for that matter... but rather Muslims themselves. Extremists want to become "mainstream" leaders and rulers of the Muslim world - through radicalizing their peoples. Terrorist actions against the West are (part of the) means of doing that.

Once that gets accomplished, they will become a more imminent vital threat to the rest of the world.

They cynically use their religion as a political ideology, but it works so far.
