TSMC begins third-phase construction at Fab 14 Rebecca Kuo, Tainan; Rodney Chan, DigiTimes.com [Friday 2 June 2006] Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) yesterday started third-phase construction on its 12-inch Fab 14 at the Tainan Science Park (TSP) and has scheduled equipment installation for the third quarter of 2007. The pure-play foundry yesterday also began installing equipment at its second-phase facilities at Fab 14. The first phase of the project, which has already been completed, currently produces 20,000 12-inch wafers per month. When all three phases are fully operational, Fab 14 will have a monthly capacity of 115,000 12-inch wafers a month. TSMC has budgeted US$2.6-2.8 billion in capital expenditure (capex) this year, chiefly for the expansion of its two 12-inch fabs (Fab 12 at the Hsinchu Science Park and Fab 14 at TSP). The company said it also plans to recruit 3,600 new employees this year, half of them being engineers and management staff digitimes.com
