Don't forget he was telling the story 10 years after the fact. Now if you were a swiftboat commander taking CIA agents into Cambodia, and seeing the gunfire and almost getting shot by friendly fire, you'd remember that. And then a few months later when Nixon ordered the secret bombing of Cambodia, and word of that got to the press and you have Nixon saying that there are no American Troops in Cambodia, and you were there and know different, you'd remember that too.

It does not surprise me that he could have spoken about his experiences sequentially like that at all. This was his retrospective, not an in the moment observation.

He basically was saying, hey I was there...I know what was going on...and President Nixon you didn't tell the truth to the American people.
