TSMC puts quotas on mature processes

Claire Sung, Taipei; Esther Lam, DigiTimes.com [Monday 29 May 2006]

Tight mature process capacity has prompted Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to place quotas on wafer-in amounts, especially for capacity for LCD driver IC production, according to industry sources. Industry players are now forced to seek additional capacity from other players.

LCD driver IC design houses like Himax Technologies and Sitronix Technology are shifting some of their orders to second-tier foundries amid quotas set by TSMC, the sources said. TSMC is transiting more LCD driver IC orders to long-established partners such as Episil Technologies and Vanguard International Semiconductor (VIS).

In related news, sources indicated that TSMC had attempted to seek capacity backup from Malaysia-based foundry 1st Silicon (1Si) on its recently developed high-voltage process. However, the potential partnership failed to develop as 1Si merged with Germany-based X-Fab Semiconductor Foundries in March 2006.
