other than stock market prices and land prices what prices actually fell in Japan for 18 years?

just about everything. it was a true deflation, not like the fake deflation that will take place in America. fake deflation is when stocks and houses go down, but the dollar continues to lose value.

I agree that most things went down.
But stocks were down by 85% or so and the price of bread dropped what: 5%? Obviously I am guessing at bread but I am sure the price of clothes or education or cars did not drop 85% either.

What's different this time (for the US) is commodity demand from China and India as well as peak oil factors that may put a floor on prices but that will not make it "fake" deflation by any stretch of the imagination.

"fake deflation is when stocks and houses go down, but the dollar continues to lose value."

good one..but with houses in the coming scenario land values in speculative areas plummet while replacement cost to construct skyrockets irrespective of a recession from time to time that causes a temporary dip in building materials

Vonage keeps sliding.

But when Shreiber tried to buy IPO shares, she first was told her purchase didn't go through. Then, after the stock plunged more than 12% on its first day, she learned that she did get some stock -- which by now was more than $2 below its offering price.
..
"After the stock tanked, it took me hours to find out how to sell my shares,'' writes Vonage customer Bob Moriarty in an email. "I'm still trying to find out how to get my cash out of the account.''
