The smearvets never had any evidence, they just lied. They lied in their first ad saying "I served with Kerry" when none of them fought with him. They lied saying "we're not with the GOP" when the financial connection between smearvet funder Bob Perry and Tom DElay and the GOP are long and obvious. They used the same PR consultants Bush used to smear McCain in 2000. They used the same lawyer Bush used. O'Neill himself has been a GOP dirty trickster since 1971. O'Neill never met Kerry in Nam. Only met him once on a TV show. Corsi never met him in his life. In fact 98% of the smearvets never met Kerry in their lives. And none of them were on Kerry's boat or fought with him. The only one who was even 50 yards away from him was Thurlow, who outright lied and contradicted Jim Rassman, the lifelong Republican Green Beret whose life Kerry saved. Thurlow also got a home from Bob Perry, which looks like an obvious payoff. There was never any evidence backing up any of the other smearvet claims. None whatsoever. And to believe any of them you'd have to believe Vietnam was a great, noble war and cause with no atrocities. In fact it was an atrocious war based on lies and escalated for no good reason. Also Nixon's FBI hounded Kerry for two years in 1971-1972 and failed to find a single speck of dirt of any kind. They pored over his military records too. In prison, O'Neill's boss Colson apologized for lying about Kerry. Now the rest of the rightwing should too.

Now, Elroy, be fair. Kerry's military record matters ONLY in how it compares the the military record of the chimp Caesar. The chimp Caesar served in the Texas Air National Guard, having jumped over hundreds of people trying to avoid the draft and Vietnam, using this route only through the "fix" provided by his family connections. At the time, the Guard was a way to avoid Vietnam without having to bug out to Canada or go to jail, unlike NOW. (Guard were referred to as "NoGo's" by regular soldiers at the time ) Bush even checked on his enlistment form that he DIDN'T want to serve overseas. Even IN a "Champaign Unit" created for the scions of the wealthy and connected in the Guard, Bush was a f*ck-up. He had to use his connections AGAIN to get an early discharge, despite not meeting his Guard obligations. Piece of cake for the son of a Senator from Texas. Ordinary people who didn't meet their Guard obligations got drafted into the regular military and sent to Vietnam. Kerry may have exaggerated his Vietnam accomplishments somewhat, but he was THERE, actually risking death - while Bush was "serving" at his local bar.
