Kerry has been attacked by the far right in every election he's run. Smaller smear campaigns vs. his anti-war leadership were waged and the Dog Hunters (his crewmates) have always successfully defended him.

What Kerry was not ready for were these outright shameless fabricated lies, and so many of them. When has that ever been attempted, to just make up 20 terrible lies about your opponent and spend 30 million bucks getting them out into the mainstream debate? Never. CLearly Rove out-smarted the Kerry campaign, but only by going more lowdown and dirty than any campaign has ever before.

Worst of all was the mainstream media actually letting the smear jockeys onto their shows to be interviewed as if they were credible people. That disproves the idea of a "liberal media" right there. That and the non-stop pressure of the campaign was what kept him from adequately fending the smears off. Even so, he might have won in Ohio if all the votes had been cast and counted fairly.
