That's kind of like saying that if someone trips over a rock and falls onto a nugget of gold that he must have been planning to search that way. Eldredge and Gould showed that in the absense of a very stong selection it is to the advantage of earth based life to retain gene sequences that closely match their relatives. This leads to fewer transcription errors after sexual recombination. It also leads to long periods of equilibrium where the lifeform does not change very much. Only in periods of extreme stress, or extreme opportunity is there more advantage in the changes than in the stability. TP
