I can explain it but you're not going to like it.

Sometimes laws fall into what is called "desuetude" when nobody enforces them. That's how they got here.

Now, as to why we aren't going to expel them. Several reasons, the two most important are about equally important. One, it would destroy our economy. Two, it would make too many people mad.

The number of people who want to throw them out is smaller than the number who want them to stay and become legalized.

Remember, being here illegally isn't a crime all by itself -- the penalty is a $500 fine.

You can pay taxes with a TIN number that you can get from the IRS, even if you're illegal.
