Hagel is from Nebraska, a foothold in the Midwest battleground states. I would be surprised if the Dems make much inroad in the south anyway unless the Republicans nominate a disaster like Frist. Or if the Reps put up a northerner like Romney...too soon to say.

Obama also has the Midwest ties and a great TV image. Putting him in the VP seat would be good seasoning and provide an instant possible successor if someone like Warner won at the top of the ticket and held on for two terms.

This guessing game will be more fun once the candidates start to make firmer pledges to run next year.
