We got out and shakily walked away.

It's been a long time since I lived in Mexico City but one thing I clearly remember was the counterintuitive approach to driving. When the traffic lights changed, you had to look both ways before entering the intersection because red lights were viewed as just informational. I dated a fellow from a very rich family. He dabbled in professional auto racing dreaming of Daytona and we talked a lot about the different cultural treatments of driving. One example is that here, when you spot an obstacle in the road, you instinctively react by decelerating. There, they honk the horn. This guy had an accident where he ended up rolling his car on one of the main streets because he was driving home after taking me home, saw a girl in the road, honked the horn but she didn't get out of the way fast enough. And he was a GOOD driver.
