Re: "...is in a war on terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan with an enemy who is fueled by our gasoline purchases. So we are financing both sides in the war on terror."

Not exactly a 'rational' policy, is it?

But I guess that depends on what the goal is --- if you desire a larger, stronger, more intrusive and Authoritarian government an associated bureaucracy... then the apparently contradictory policies are near ideal and *extremely* effective.

Gas is already about twice as high as it was 5 years ago and you think the answer is to raise the price to $3.50 and keep it there?

I agree that requiring higher fuel standards is essential...if for nothing else but keeping our domestic auto industry competitive, but killing the economy and unnecessarily burdening the poor doesn't seem like the best way to go. For one thing, ANY politician that comes out for that can kiss their political future goodbye.

Why not designate $50 billion to be directed to the most promising alternative fuel programs. Offered as rewards or venture capital or seed money for existing programs?

I know that Friedman at the NYTs thinks that just raising the gas price is gonna be a panacea for free market solutions, but I'll bet ya' that 5 years ago he would have been saying the same thing about raising the price to today's current levels and today's levels haven't exactly solved the problem.
