We had a little issue on the way back from a Med run one year that ended up with us on the surface with no air conditioning and we were venting our steam generators inboard. The engine room was 155° and 100% humidity for awhile. It was extremely unpleasant to put it mildly. We spent the remainder of our transit without fresh water for showering so 4 days of extreme heat, sweat, etc and no showers. We were ripe to put it mildly. Wife wouldn't even give me a kiss and she hadn't seen me in 6 months:)

I think it was a good 2 weeks before the smell really cleared the boat. The first days you would almost gag at the intense gym sock smell as you went down the hatch. Didn't notice it when we were couped up in it but going back down the hatch after breathing real air was tough to do.
