Dan,

Nice thing about it would be more memory channels, meaning, if you limit to 1 DIMM per channel (to get max speed) you can use 4 DIMMs.

It's quite a bit more than that. Single socket motherboards are about $250 less than dual socket boards. They aren't in the EATX format which means you don't spend an extra $150 having an exotic case shipped to you and it's easy to fit where a regular PC will fit.

Is Conroe dual socket capable? If not- then it pushes the high performance market towards a solution that Intel cannot even enable.

They are not going to push a woodcrest + FBDIMM against a DDR2 2S FX solution in (as you point out) a standard ATX motherboard- hopefully in nominally higher cost motherboard.

That should completely take the wind out of Conroe sails with the gamers/top/hign end performers.

Couple that with the suspicion that the 4MB cache (and performance) takes a nose dive on multi threaded apps- Conroe will get crushed in a 3,4,5+ thread application.

Dan, its price point will be such that it amounts to a PR stunt, and little else. Call it the "we have no answer to Conroe" system.

EDIT: How about instead of "4 x 4" we use the non-PC term "Rice Rocket" for this new initiative? Lots of noise, fins, and decals, but mediocre performance when it comes to actual driving... :)

In fact, if I were going to come up with a title for today's Analyst Day, it would be:

"Wait for 2007 -- P.S. No financial questions, please."

For one needs to wait until:

Q107 for any real 65nm part availability
Q307 for any K8L parts, any QC parts
mid-2007 for Chartered 65nm starts
2007 for "bulldozer"

Really, about the only good thing I heard was the added HT link in the K8L.
